“There is no path to peace, peace is the path.”  Mahatma Gandhi

In the Vedic tradition, PRASHANTA (प्रशान्त) is a term formed from the prefix “pra,” which can be translated as intensive, perfect, or complete, and the word “shanti,” which means peace. Therefore, PRASHANTA can be translated as “perfect peace” or “deeply calm.”

When we talk about PRASHANTA or deep peace, we refer to both the inner and outer perception of oneself; no more agitation, conflict or turmoil, the mind is calm, emotions are balanced, and serenity is omnipresent. It is an active, living and stable peace that arises from understanding or spiritual realisation. It is a state of mind that has transcended fear, anger and desire and savours the nature of pure consciousness.

According to Asian spiritual tradition, the state of PRASHANTA requires daily meditation practice to facilitate detachment from external disturbances, purification of negative emotions, study of self-knowledge and trust in the flow of life.

PRASHANTA evokes:

  • Deep and stable serenity regardless of circumstances.
  • The ability to spread calm and peace around oneself.
  • Impartiality of heart and mind.
  • Mental and emotional stability.
  • Accepting what is without judgement and without excessive attachment.

PRASHANTA – deep peace is the medicine of the spleen and pancreas. It is stability and confidence regained after turmoil, doubt and mistrust in life and others. In Chinese medicine, this state of being resonates fully with the energy of the spleen and pancreas in balance.

People with weakened spleen and pancreas function stagnate, are very impulsive and become increasingly rigid in their speech. They ruminate, are distrustful, tormented, struggle to free themselves from their programmes and beliefs, and these aspects block their creativity. The integration and ‘digestion’ of both food and mental data are compromised. They are prisoners of their fears and mistrust.

When the spleen and pancreas are balanced, creative potential can evolve and be exploited. These are people with good digestion and qualities such as emotional stability, endurance and confidence. They are loyal, supportive and resilient, impartial and open to change, new experiences and new stages in life.

When worries, incessant rumination or anxiety set in, the energy of the spleen and pancreas becomes depleted and goes round in circles like heavy clouds in the centre of the sky. The inner breath becomes heavy and the nourishing stability of the Earth at the end of summer – that in-between season when everything ripens and gathers in a peaceful centre – cracks, allowing the mind to wander in a maze of uncertainty.

PRASHANTA stabilises thoughts and emotions, allowing the mind to be freed from torment and confidence and serenity to be regained. Traumatic experiences can make us apathetic and pessimistic and leave imprints at the cellular level in the physical body. Taking things (and ourselves) too seriously prevents serenity. This constant mistrust creates fatigue, exhaustion and, according to Chinese medicine, can prevent the spleen-pancreas system from functioning properly.

PRASHANTA – The synergy of regained serenity and inner and outer calm. A synergy that facilitates letting go, calmness and also focus, solidarity, loyalty, endurance and lucidity.

PRASHANTA helps when worries pile up and the mind goes round in circles, when thoughts become heavy and sticky like storm clouds in the centre of the sky, the inner Earth cracks and confidence falters. Then PRASHANTA, gentle and sunny, comes to cast its golden light on this inner landscape: it dispels the mist, lightens the breath and gathers the scattered pieces of the being. Like a quiet clearing in the heart of Indian summer, it offers the soul a stable and nourishing ground on which to rest, a peaceful centre where forces can reorganise and strengthen themselves.

PRASHANTA facilitates confidence and clarity, supports memory and concentration, and helps to better integrate information. A synergy that helps to overcome mistrust, obsessive thoughts, mental rigidity and attachment to past beliefs and programmes.

PRASHANTA purifies and clarifies thoughts and emotions that block creativity, endurance and lucidity. You constantly observe and evaluate every situation, every person and every detail… You tend to systematically check and control the information you receive, and to approach things — and yourself — with a sometimes excessive seriousness. Do the following exercise in the morning for 11 consecutive days:

  • Apply the PRASHANTA synergy to your fingertips, then close your eyes and inhale the scent from the bottle for two minutes with your left hand placed on your pancreas area, visualising a golden light beneath your hand.
  • Sit comfortably on a chair or cross-legged, with your back straight.
  • Place both hands on your upper abdomen, below your ribs, on the left side at the level of your pancreas and spleen. Relax and think about your pancreas, spleen and stomach until you feel a connection with these organs.
  • Visualise a golden light flooding this area.
  • Open your eyes and place your fingertips on this area, at the base of your rib cage on the left side.
  • Look up at the sky and gently press your fingers into your rib cage.
  • Breathe in!
  • Exhale and make the sound “HOOOOOOO” while leaning forward with a very drawn-out, pronounced “H”.
  • Form a circle with your arms in front of you, visualising a yellow light purifying your spleen, pancreas and stomach, and smile.
  • Imagine that this yellow light creates more discernment, objectivity and serenity within you.
  • Close your eyes and remain silent for a moment, becoming aware of your stomach, spleen and pancreas.
  • Repeat this entire exercise 5 times.
